Literacy Overview

Balanced literacy approach

Imagine entering a classroom where teachers offer a balanced literacy approach to students. You would see the following:

  • baskets of books organized by topics, interests, book types and favorite authors
  • students selecting and reading books independently at a level appropriate to them
  • teachers reading engaging books, modeling how a reader thinks while reading
  • teachers providing a variety of ways for students to express themselves through writing
  • teachers teaching whole group and small group based on student need
  • teachers regularly conferencing with individual students
  • teachers explicitly teaching the social skills of speaking and listening
  • teachers teaching the skill of public speaking through classroom presentations
  • teachers guiding students to identify themselves as readers and writers
  • teachers making assessment and evaluation a daily routine.

This is the environment of balanced literacy. I help teachers gain the confidence to provide this environment for their students.
