Reading

Reading workshop

Imagine entering a classroom where students are immersed in a workshop approach to reading. You would see the following:

  • teachers providing short, focused lessons
    • on reading skills
    • on word study
    • on reading strategies
    • on reading like a writer
    • on how to select books reflecting current reading ability
  • teachers sharing their own reading lives
  • teachers reading aloud a variety of books
  • teachers teaching whole group and small group based on student need
  • teachers regularly conferencing with individual students
  • teachers making assessment and evaluation a daily routine
  • students selecting the books they wish to read
  • students reading independently for significant blocks of time
  • students reading from a variety of genres and reading levels from classroom libraries
  • students talking about their reading
    • during guided reading
    • during literature circles
    • during student/teacher conferences
  • students record their reading lives in a reading journal
    • about books they have read
    • about books they want to read
    • about their thinking
    • about their reading goals

This is the environment of reading workshop. I help teachers gain the confidence to provide this environment for their students.
